The Life Outside Issue

Introducing the Life Outside issue of Habitus magazine. With life increasingly being absorbed into a digital space, there is never a more important moment to hold something tangible. In this context, the power of nature to have a physiological impact on our sense of wellbeing has never been more important. So how can we cultivate the benefits of the our natural environment in the most intimate of places – our homes? This was the question that helped to bring this issue of Habitus to life.

Silversmith

Simple and stylish, Pip Keane’s designs jewellery reflect her fascination for clean-cut geometric shapes.

Pip Keane is a silversmith with a passion for manufacturing jewellery and hollowware. Often taking inspiration from her clients, Keane’s latest Pebble Road range grew beyond the creation just of a bespoke piece for a female client into a collection with a life of its own.

Using a variety of silver smithing techniques and materials such as silver, gold, titanium and delrin, Keane’s unique shapes integrate and overlap to create individual fashion accessories. One of Pip’s design signatures is a clever catch – a toggle at the back of necklaces with sliding, interlocking components.

Having studied a four-year Visual Arts course (majoring in silver smithing) at the Canberra School of Art, Australian National University, Pip moved to Sydney in 1996 after completing her studies.
Since then she has opened her own design studio and developed a niche clientele for her beautiful jewellery. She is now represented by galleries and boutiques throughout Australia and internationally.

Tea Strainer: Bubble Along Inspiration

Pip Keane’s series of intricate tea strainers (pictured) led to the development of the bubble collection. Pip loves to map out beautiful patterns and you can see how the patterns in the strainer are replicated in the bubble collection. The blackened finish in the ‘bubble along’ collection acts as a backdrop while the pebble designs from the Pebble Road jewellery collection were also inspired by the design process discovered while she silver smithed the tea strainers.

Pebble Road Cuff

The pebble road cuff, which then formed the basis of a whole collection, was inspired by a client.  Pip’s client wanted a stand out arm piece of grand dimensions.  She briefed Pip on her bespoke piece and after completing it, Pip realised there was more to explore within that technique and hence the birth of the pebble road collection.
