Make Great Together at aMBUSH Gallery

T-shirt worlds collide as the planet’s most formidable online T-shirt force Threadless and the globe’s only T-shirt journal, T-world, combine to ‘make great together’ at aMBUSH Gallery. 

The public event is an open house to view Threadless artworks, as curated by Eddie Zammit’s T-world. This will be T-world’s first event after spending several months in New York launching the current edition. “Vivid Ideas were very generous in allowing us to partner with Threadless for this 'one night only' event. I have a few things up my sleeve, even though I only ever wear T-shirts! Clearly you’ll see plenty of T-shirt art and I’m super keen to show off some emerging and leading Threadless talent,” Zammit says. 

Threadless now boast a community of 1.8 million designers and design lovers, who post, vote on and buy unique T-shirt designs – over 1,000 are submitted each week. 

According to Nickell, who is visiting Sydney for the Vivid Ideas festival to present a keynote talk,  “I've been following T-world for quite some time and I've been extremely impressed by the depth and quality of the content and the journal itself. Eddie sure knows how to dig in, and puts everything he has into it. The events he puts together are unbelievably well thought out and over the top... in a good way!”  

 The exhibition will include 200 x Threadless T-shirts curated by T-world, 10+ featured Threadless artworks and renowned Australian illustrator Ben Brown will be painting a wall mural exclusively for the evening.

Featured Australian and New Zealand Threadless artists include David Creighton-Pester, Dan Elijah G. Fajardo, Emery Greer, Pascal Hoayek, Aaron Hogg, Yeoh Guan Hong, Simon Massey di Vallazza, Leon Ryan, Blair Sayer and Ross Zietz. 

Make Great Together is on at aMBUSH Gallery Friday 8 June from 7-11pm.

Sculpture at MiCK Gallery

MiCK Gallery presents Sculpture, a group exhibition curated by gallery director Megan Dick, in association with Sculpture International. This exhibition marks the launch of what is to be MiCK’s annual sculpture exhibition with the premise being to showcase some of Australia and Sculpture International’s most unique and varied leading artists in the field.  Featured in the exhibition is work by members of Sculpture by the Sea's 'Decade Club' who have exhibited 10 times, including: Orest Keywan  - two times winner of Sculpture By The Sea (1999 & 2006); Stephen King, winner of the Sculpture by the Sea Curators Prize (2011); Keizo Ushio and Koichi Ishino.

Also exhibiting are the sculptors: John Brooke; Thomas Bucich; Peter Hjort; Junky Projects (Daniel Lynch); Blaze Krstanoski – Blazeksi; Al Phemister and Linda Bowden.

The practises and methodologies behind the chosen works range from depictions of imagined personas, invented language, urban gestures and complex, unrevealed material gestures made to pose questions regarding identity, authorship, originality and reality to the viewer.

Running from 5-30 June, the exhibition will be officially opened by David Handley, Founder & Director of Sculpture by the Sea On Thursday 7 June.

Albert Street Food & Wine

Located in the heart of Brunswick's Sydney Road, the project has converted an historic space into a contemporary restaurant which integrates highlights of the building's past with the best of modern design. 

Lead architect Fiona Drago explains that "the design aimed to provide a welcoming, relaxed space that reflected its location and heritage, with a nod to Italian enoteche and New York wine bars." The concept was to combine an all-day eatery, wine bar and food and wine store, with the central bar serving to divide the space into more intimate zones. Each area is flexible, however, accommodating diners when necessary. 

The beginning of the fit out consisted of stripping the building back to its original state; Drago comments that "previous refurbishments were removed to reveal the original timber floor and an intricate ceiling structure of riveted steel beams and timber joists [and] north-facing windows were uncovered to fill the space with natural light."

With this canvas to work with the renovation became an exercise in how to complement the building's original features while incorporating it into its modern urban context. In response to this most of the new materials and furniture were sourced locally, often recycled from other renovations. Drago specifies that "tables were crafted by Hamish Knox from turpentine timber salvaged from a basketball court and the bar top was formed from reclaimed blackbutt wharf decking." Other additions include the brass mesh above the bar that conceals the air conditioning and, as Drago points out, "echoes old tellers’ screens" and black acoustic insulation inserted between the ceiling jousts.  

Some of owner Stuart Brookshaw and Drago's favourite elements are "the contrasts in the space .... The morning sun on the deck, the light bright room during the day making it feel bright and cheerful, then at night (my favorite time, says Stuart) is when the space is at its best becoming moody and candlelit. It’s amazing how a low light room at night can make a big space feel very intimate. And of course the height; we love our soaring ceilings and raw beams."

On the culinary side the concept was to offer a modern mediterranean menu focusing on local produce, paired with an extensive wine list that comprehensively represents Victorian and international vintages. Particularly exciting is  executive chef (and renowned pâtissière) Philippa Sibley's contribution, as Drago says,  " [she] is now going back to her roots by creating a innovative savory menu. We are excited everyday to see what Philippa creates. She is a true artisan."

Vivid Sydney’s Lights Go Underwater

As part of Sydney's Vivid festival Brisbane design firm The Buchan Group has created a subaquatic light sculpture called sub|version. Resembling a giant man, the creation needs to not only project onto the extremely challenging medium of water, but also to incorporate perspective and tonal corrections to simulate a three dimensional form within the water.

The water projection includes elements usually found on land, like high-contrast people, objects and scenes, but gives the impression of them being submerged in Sydney Harbour, hiding in the depths. The Buchan Group team behind sub|version combines the artistic talents of Gary Edmonds, Bruce Hart, Patrick Shirley and Anthony Rawson, with the projector and media server provided by Haycom AV.  

“An array of visual geometries and interplays punctuate the narrative and explore the relationship of light, water, perception and the unexpected in this strangely submerged, inverted reality,” said Buchan Group Associate Director Gary Edmonds. “Some elements are intended to nudge at the edge of perception, leaving the viewer unsure what they might have glimpsed, while others are plainly revealed, striving for attention.”

Vivid Sydney runs from 25 May to 11 June 2012. From 6pm to midnight every night, there will be a free light show with interactive and immersive light art sculptures, illuminated skyscrapers and large scale projections around The Rocks, Circular Quay, Sydney Opera House and Walsh Bay.
