The Life Outside Issue

Introducing the Life Outside issue of Habitus magazine. With life increasingly being absorbed into a digital space, there is never a more important moment to hold something tangible. In this context, the power of nature to have a physiological impact on our sense of wellbeing has never been more important. So how can we cultivate the benefits of the our natural environment in the most intimate of places – our homes? This was the question that helped to bring this issue of Habitus to life.

Decorative Luminaires By ANDlight

With a desire to design functional lighting, ANDlight has always aimed to create honest products – and at Salone, it showed us how.

When Matt Davis, co-founder and owner of Canadian-brand ANDlight said, “…there is no other venue that offers both a rich history of design and a glimpse into the future,” he was referring to Euroluce, the lighting Biennale hosted by Salone del Mobile.

As its first appearance at Euroluce this year, ANDlight’s creative director Lukas Peet opted for a display where each lighting collection is viewed in endless functional possibilities. The grey tonal backdrop made for a muted space that showed off the forms, finishes and materials of ANDlight’s designs. In addition to this, the brand also released its three newest collections, the Pebble series, the Array series and the Vale series.

Designed by Lukas Peat and Caine Heintzman, the three collections by ANDlight explore the relationship between light and matter, whether it’s the three-dimensional acrylic used in the Vale series, the blown glass in Pebble or the stone aesthetic of Array.

Known to design with a craft that challenges the familiar and the normative, Lukas is recognised internationally for being an award-winning product designer. For the Pebble series, where Lukas drew his inspiration from river rocks, the lighting pendants celebrate the qualities of stone. Proportionately lit, two glass-blown spheres result in a bespoke lighting fixture that projects a different and new silhouette from every angle. Available in an opaque, translucent, glossy, etched or varying in the colour of the finish, the range honours diverse qualities of pebbles found in and around nature.

The aluminium LED holder of the Pebble collection also elegantly houses electrical cables and its suspension system, continuing the sleek design.

Diffusing light in an ambient manner, Array balances technical design with minimalism. “The starting point for the Array collection was a subtle indirect light fixture,” says Lukas. “The fixture’s methodical form and orderly rhythm are contrasted by the subtly textured and seemingly disorderly natural stone-like finish.”

The combination of spun aluminium reflectors and bespoke LED boards brings attention to the material of the fixture itself. Obtainable in three finishes: Granite, Basalt or Magma, the Array pendants can be used in a wide range of interior settings.

With an industrial design background, Caine applied his creativity and experience with intricate aesthetic refinement to the design of the Vale series. Available as a single pendant or surface mounted, the prismatic surface of Vale creates a soft hue and sparsely diffuses light. Accompanied by the option to suspend vertically or horizontally, Caine designed Vale to be “lightweight and translucent, yet able to create volume [within a space].” Similar to Pebble, the lightweight aluminium frame of Vale conceals technical features, electrical chords and the suspension system.

In Australia, ANDlight is available at KODA Lighting.
