Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

Luxury and green design don’t get much better than this resort on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula.

Travelling ‘green’ is obviously becoming more important to many Design Hunters™, but that doesn’t mean we have to lose the luxury of a beautifully designed resort.

The brainchild of hotelier Mark Edelson, the Alila Villas Uluwatu – designed by Singaporean architects, WOHA – are Green Globe certified, adhering to the highest standards of Environmentally Sustainable Design.

The cliff-top location gives breathtaking views across the Indian Ocean, and the accommodation has been designed to literally open up to vista.

As you’d expect from a US$750/night resort, each of the 84 villas has a private pool, cabana, garden and pavilion, as well as the highest finish of interiors.

If you decide to leave, the airport is 30 mins drive away, but with food and beverage offerings like The Warung, The Restaurant, The Lounge and The Clifftop Bar, what more could you need, right?

It may not be within reach for everyone, but the pictures are almost like being there (okay, nothing like it, but you get the rough idea). With close attention paid to water conservation, recycling and energy saving you can rest assured that you’re minimizing your footprint on this magical part of the world.

So carbon offset those flights, leave the Prius in the garage and jet off to Bali’s greenest resort.
