The 'Bespoke' Issue

With Guest Editor Yasmine Ghoniem, we are launched headfirst into the world of unique and eclectic design. From architecture to interiors, there is nothing that can’t be enlivened with bespoke interventions. Granted, a stunningly beautiful home can be made by simply shopping for the best, but when the artist’s hand is introduced, some pure magic is possible. Whether it is an artwork or a new upholstery, a built-in component or a mosaic inlay, these gestures, whether bold or subtle, are what make the home unique.

Bay of Fires Lodge

Australia

Tasmania’s pristine coastline is within reach with this hidden
retreat

Much of
Australia’s landscape retains the enviable title of ‘unspoiled’, with seemingly
endless stretches of coastline. If there is one particular place that deserves
this tag, it’s Tasmania’s Bay of Fires.

So when
architect Ken Latona was invited to design an accommodation lodge set on the
Bay of Fires coastline, it was clear that the building would need to sit as
lightly as possible upon the landscape.

Comprising
two long timber and glass pavilions, The Bay of Fires Lodge used sustainable
materials and construction methods to minimise its impact on the surrounding
environment – atop a hill overlooking the ocean and surrounded by Mount William
National Park
.

However,
this luxury accommodation does not come without a little work – though one
could hardly call absorbing the natural coastal beauty on offer ‘work’ – this
unique experience incorporating at least three days of walking to get to the
Lodge.

On the
first night guests will enjoy the demountable accommodation at Forester Beach
Camp (also designed by Latona), while traversing the beautiful coastline and
stopping to eat and relax on the white sandy beaches and reaching the Lodge on
the second day.

Fortunately
there is no need to lug all your belongings, or food, with the guides arranging
for all your needs including preparing meals. The Lodge has been specifically
designed to provide maximum connection with the environment, with decks and
windows framing views across the wilderness.

For the
adventurous Design Hunter™, the Bay of Fires Lodge will take you off the beaten
track to bring you considerate, sustainable architecture in a truly unspoiled
region.
