Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

Fine Art Retreats

Indonesia

For those with an artistic streak, here’s an Asian escape that’s bound to pique your interest.

There are holidays, then there are true experiences. If you’re a budding artist (or even a practising artist) you’ll love the fantastic, engaging Fine Art Retreats.

Indulge in Bali’s culture, getting to know the local Balinese community, with these retreats. Organised by art dealer Michael Nagy and artist Davina Stephens, the retreats see renowned Australian artists lead daily workshops.

Garry Shead, Jason Benjamin, Joshua Yeldham and Fairlie Kingston have all been secured to discuss how their work – from fine art to photography – and how it is inspired and shaped by the Balinese surroundings.

“The calibre of artistic talent coupled with our local knowledge provides guests with a magical experience and the opportunity to express themselves creatively,” says Michael Nagy.

Exploring the beauty of exotic Ubud, guests will stay in the luxury accommodation of Warwick Ibah where just 17 villas an suites offer a tranquil view of the inspirational Campuhan River. You’ll also be guided aroung the volcanoes, rainforests, rice fields and waterfalls, while being inspired by the architectural heritage of temples, palaces and local villages.

You won’t be roughing it at all though, with gourmet picnic lunches provided by Lynley Marston.

The Charles McKean Bali Photographic workshop will be held from the September 17-24, 2011. The award-winning photographer will lead a workshop on digital photography, focussing on approach rather than the technical side of taking pictures, with an emphasis on artistic and compositional aspects.

The retreat includes 7 night’s accommodation, tuition and excursion fees, guides, translators, cultural talks, airport transfers and express visa service. Prices start at $5,470 per person.
