Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

The Olsen

Australia

The second in the Art Series hotels, The Olsen once again
pays tribute to one of Australia’s greatest living artists – John Olsen.

Entering The Olsen is altogether a very different experience
to its sister (or more correctly ‘brother’) hotel, The Cullen.

Although they exhibit the same high attention to details and
quality finish, and while both are along the same ‘artistic’ theme, the
personality of John Olsen’s artworks have dictated a unique approach to the
interiors.

This hotel is a bit larger, with 14 floors of studio and
2-bedroom suites as well as the magnificent penthouse with views to the city.
There is an elegance about the finishes, slightly more understated than The
Cullen, however Olsen’s unmistakable characters including his frogs, pelicans
and seascapes.

With Starck Louis Ghost chairs and other contemporary
interpretations of classical design, the rooms are quite, reflective spaces,
which invite you to jump into the incredibly comfortable bed and enjoy the
artworks hung around the room (or even read a book or two – also provided).

This hotel shares the same attentive service of by staff and
is literally a footstep away from everything Chapel Street has to offer, from
shop-til-you-drop retail to great cafes and entertainment.

As with their other hotels Art Series offers Smart Cars for
hire to help get you around Melbourne as well as blue bicycles and (if you don’t
get enough exercise pedalling) there’s also an on-site gym for the fitness focussed.

This was my second taste of the Art Series hotels and it
didn’t disappoint – there is something about being around these wonderful
pieces of Australia’s art history (and present) that is culturally and
personally a very fulfilling experience.
