Vintage Modern Issue

The breadth and scope of Habitus has always been extraordinary. With how we live at heart of every issue, we have stepped it up with Guest Editor David Flack of Flack Studio shaking the ‘how’ and looking at new ways to make a house a home. With Vintage Modern as the issues theme, we look at the way iconic design has stayed with us, how daring pieces from the past can add the wow factor and how architecture and good design defy the pigeon hole of their era.

A Look Back at Denfair

With Denfair 2016 having come and gone, we take a look back a few highlights from the design event.

Denfair had visitors enter a world of design creativity, as exemplified by the presence of Handkrafted. A community marketplace intended to connect consumers with woodworkers and craftspeople, Handkrafted allows people to commission custom furniture and goods. Handkrafted presented a space at Denfair where emerging designers could come together, including Hugh Makin of Makin Workshop. Based in Castlemaine, Victoria, Makin designs pieces from local Victorian trees and is a maker of modern designers furniture. Areas of specialisation include freestanding furniture and cabinetry, and were on show at Denfair. The other wares on show at the Handkrafted presentation included objects from Victorian furniture designers Bern Chandley, Auld Design, Smith & Thomas, Sawdust Bureau, Apparentt, and Glencross.

Denfair isn’t just about design, with an art presence notable in 2016. The Gallery presented spaces that represented the art world and how design intersects that world. Celebrating and strengthening the contemporary art sector, ‘The Gallery’ was present in 2016 with an inspiring line up of independent artists representing local and commercial galleries. Galleries and artists included Kerry Armstrong, Hannah Quinlivan, Flinders Lane Gallery, Karen Woodbury Gallery and Gallery Smith. The Gallery served as a gateway for the marriage of art and design professionals; a space where visitors were able to explore the complementary nature of design and artistic expression, and the pivotal role art has on the interior experience.
