A workplace odyssey: Herman Miller puts on a sensory experience of office history

Renowned furniture brand Herman Miller recently hosted a unique and exclusive event – ‘A Taste of Herman Miller’ – in Melbourne on February 15, 2024.

This invitation-only, one-of-a-kind occasion aimed to provide architects and designers with a distinctive sensory experience delving into the history of the workplace and Herman Miller’s significant contributions to the evolution of workspaces. The immersive experience prompted participants to contemplate the future of workplace design, fostering a round-table discussion during the meal where they shared insights on the evolving needs of their clients and projects.

The event, held at Space & Time in North Melbourne, started off in the 1940s as attendees were transported to an era in which offices were clinical spaces filled with cumbersome furniture and typewriters.

The exploration continued through the introduction of ground-breaking designs such as Action Office, the Aeron Chair, and the Eames Moulded Fiberglass Chair, each playing a pivotal role in transforming the aesthetics and functionality of office spaces.

The event then delved into the digital age, revealing the birthplace of ergonomic chairs and the advent of activity-based work. Culminating in the present day, where hybrid working and intelligent workspaces have become the norm.

It’s safe to say that, with this invite-only event, Herman Miller surpassed the conventional boundaries of a typical lunchtime gathering. Attendees were treated to an immersive journey through pivotal moments that have shaped both global events and the way we work closer to home, prompting thought-provoking questions about the contemporary workplace design scene.

The experience, facilitated by cutting-edge technology and heartily complemented by a curated three-course meal courtesy of Andrew McConnell’s Trader House Team at Handmade, offered participants a nuanced understanding of the interconnectedness between historical milestones and workspace design.

Josh Coughlan, MillerKnoll Regional Sales Manager, expressed the significance of the event: “These gatherings provided an exceptional opportunity for us to connect with key architects and designers who share our passion for pioneering workplace design.”

‘A Taste of Herman Miller’ is set to continue its journey in Sydney and will later visit other key cities in Australia throughout the year. This exclusive event series not only showcases Herman Miller’s commitment to problem-solving design but also emphasises their enduring impact on the evolution of workspaces over the last century.
