About me:
The works of Andy Warhol have become firmly established in the collective subconscious – mainly because they showed people what they already knew. Warhol (1928 – 1987), the true master of Pop Art, used popular culture as the source for his provocative works. For some people this confirmed New Yorker was the “court painter of the 70s”, for others he was a provocative genius who turned the triteness of our world into an art event.
Warhol, a former commercial artist, sought truth not in the abstract but in the labels spread all over the world by the mass media. His art was suited to the silkscreen medium, by which the motif is separated into color planes yet remains legible.
“Shopping is more American than thinking”, quipped the clever businessman and visionary, and he was understood. For Andy Warhol’s icons had already been popular before they were stylized into Pop Art, thus creating the world famous trademarks of his own production.
As a seismograph of modern civilization, he made the series and apparently stereotyped repetitions into an art experience, a concept that shows remarkable similarity to that of the Rosenthal studio-line. Philip Rosenthal – himself portrayed by Warhol – started his avant-garde collection in the early sixties with the idea of bringing together contemporary art and fine tableware. His focus was on the interplay between function and cultural event.
