Kitchen & Bathroom Issue

Kitchens and bathrooms are, arguably, the most consequential rooms in the home — and almost always the first to be considered. Whether approached through renovation or new build, their design has the power to recalibrate how a home is lived in and experienced. For this issue, our guest editor, Mardi Doherty, principal of Studio Doherty, explores what it truly means to transform these pivotal spaces — and why thoughtful design in kitchens and bathrooms delivers dividends far beyond the purely functional. Her insights both as an architect and as her own client give an open and honest account of the thinking behind creating a home.

Immersion of the senses

Humanity emerges from water, and it is to water we return when we long for restoration, relaxation and replenishment of our souls.

For a city dweller, the bathtub is where this private communing between the body and the element of life finds its most perfect expression.

The vessel in which we immerse is not incidental to this experience. It shapes and enhances the moment, something Mario Ferrarini has captured in the form of the Oasi bathtubs by Antoniolupi. The refined sensory elegance of the Oasi form has been expressed in Antoniolupi’s gorgeous new material, Gemmantea.

This dense, velvety resin has a mesmerising semi-transparent surface within which pastel tones dissolve into opalescent layers. Warm to the touch, Gemmantea transforms bathing into a visual and tactile experience that is soft, luminous and as elegant as bathing in crystal. Form and light engage in subtle interplay that enhances both the sense of depth and the silhouette of curves that have been tailored by a master of design to enhance comfort and serenity.

The result is a bathtub that creates a restful and evocative focal point within the bathroom, suggesting harmony, balance and luxurious sensory comforts.

Oasi’s natural elegance has been thoughtfully considered from the functional perspective also. The design creates an ergonomic interior that supports and cradles the human body in optimal comfort. Sides gently slope toward the centre, enhancing the sense of immersion.

An invisible overflow ensures the bathing level does not exceed the desired depth for safety and preventing overflows. The meticulously formed edges are smoothed for comfort and ease, while the options for combing with tapware and additional fixtures including panelling and enclosures opens up potential for harmonising with a wide range of aesthetics and interior schematics.

Antoniolupi is also known for considering the space in which a bathtub will take pride of place, including small, constrained and non-conventional room dimensions. Whether it is a grand home, a chic apartment, an open loft or a hospitality suite, there is a bathtub design that will enhance the bathroom space with both sophistication and sumptuous comfort.

Oasi in Gemmantea is available in oblong, freestanding, oval, corner and niche configurations, with dimensions ranging from elegant smaller oval baths up to deep, oblong masterpieces nearly two metres long that express the epitome of magnificent, opulent bathing.

The Gemmantea resin lends itself to pearlescent pastels, whites and lustrous ebonies, all with the distinctive and compelling sheen and semi-translucent qualities. This is a material that seeks to be perceived both with the eyes and with the sensation of touch, registering as innately pleasing and inviting.

At the heart of the design imagination and impeccable making, is the synergy between tangible form, inherent transparency and rich colour. In this, the Oasi bathtub elevates and centres relaxation, and reconnection with the feeling of wellbeing and wholeness. As a focal point in a bathroom, it is a presence that is a steady reminder of the power of the pause, the importance of self-care and the restorative energy of water.
