The 'Future' Issue

Habitus #64 Welcome to the HABITUS ‘Future’ and ‘Habitus House of the Year’ Issue. We are thrilled to have interior designer of excellence, Brahman Perera, as Guest Editor and to celebrate his Sri Lankan heritage through an interview with Palinda Kannangara and his extraordinary Ek Onkar project – divine! Thinking about the future, we look at the technology shaping our approach to sustainability and the ways traditional materials are enjoying a new-found place in the spotlight. Profiles on Yvonne Todd, Amy Lawrance, and Kallie Blauhorn are rounded out with projects from Studio ZAWA, SJB, Spirit Level, STUDIOLIVE, Park + Associates and a Lake House made in just 40 days by the wonderful Wutopia Lab, plus the short list for the Habitus House of the Year!

By Joost homewares

Earthy, natural and unique, By Joost’s range of homewares have an authenticity that is honest and attractive.

Maintaining By Joost’s design/manufacture philosophy, this homeware range pays homage to the environment it is created from and to which it must, eventually return. Using raw terra cotta sourced in Australia highlights the objects’ connections to the earth, and collaboration with local artisans results in individually crafted bespoke pottery.

From their organic origins the Joost ceramics will gain character as they age, developing new colours and textures, and at the end of their lives they are simply broken down and returned to the earth.

In the words of Joost Bakker himself, “I want to bring our food back to the start. The pot acts as a reminder that this food has been harvested, planted, grown.”
