The 'Bespoke' Issue

With Guest Editor Yasmine Ghoniem, we are launched headfirst into the world of unique and eclectic design. From architecture to interiors, there is nothing that can’t be enlivened with bespoke interventions. Granted, a stunningly beautiful home can be made by simply shopping for the best, but when the artist’s hand is introduced, some pure magic is possible. Whether it is an artwork or a new upholstery, a built-in component or a mosaic inlay, these gestures, whether bold or subtle, are what make the home unique.

Design Hunter™ Q+A with Sven Baacke

Habitusliving catches up with Gaggenau head designer Sven Baacke at the Milan design fair.

Your name:

Sven Baacke

Your occupation:

Head of Design of Gaggenau, a German luxury manufacturer of home appliances

What is your latest project?

Our new Gaggenau Vario 400 cooktop series

What brings you to Salone del Mobile 2012?

The presentation of our new cooktop series on our very puristic booth at Eurocucina:

Two accessible cubes – one out of oak wood, the other out of raw steel – illustrate the transformation of precious raw material into masterpiece.

What are you most looking forward to at SDM 2012?

Talking to design colleagues from all over the world, being inspired by the city of Milan in April: spring time and design time – and of course showing our new project for the first time!

What has been your favorite product or project so far at SDM 2012?

Marble kitchen workbench study (lando), CEA shower faucet studies, wooden “clothes-peg-fork” (salone satellite)

What is your all time favourite:

Building:

Mies van der Rohe`s Barcelona Pavilion

Piece of furniture:

At the moment: My Fermop Luxemburg low armchairs in “bleu turqoise” in combination with the Gaggenau mobile Outdoor Grill from the 70`s on my balcony….

Car/boat/mode of transport:

Riding on my innocenti lambretta scooter from 1962 through the city of Munich on a warm summer evening.

Accessory:

My cutting board out of solid oak found at Margaret Howell, London

My ic! berlin sunglasses

Interior design:

John Pawson`s House (and kitchen), London

Who is your design inspiration?

Not a specific person, but all the little things and details I recognize around me every day looking at the world with curious eyes.

What is your design philosophy?

Reduce everything to the essential, but do not remove poetry.
