The notion of the kitchen being the heart of the home is an expression used all too often – but on the Fitzroy Project by Robert Nichol & Sons the kitchen is well and truly the epicentre of it all, and it was the final piece to be designed.
The project has been more than five years in the making, with incremental stages added to it over time. The last piece of the puzzle culminated in the kitchen.
Positioned in-between a new addition and the original bluestone cottage – including vast, cathedral-high ceilings – is a central connector to every other room and is a space filled with life and texture.
David Nicholson, co-director of Robert Nichol & Sons, shares that every design decision in the kitchen, from the Japanese linen-finish laminate cabinetry to the Gaggenau appliances, is a response to the clients philosophy of “do it once, do it well”.
With a captivating story behind it and a design-led approach, the Fitzroy Project took out the ‘Best of the Best’at the inaugural Gaggenau Kitchen of Year Design Contest.
The Gaggenau Kitchen of the Year Design Contest 2is an initiative focused on highlighting the most outstanding kitchen designs from across Australia. A well-respected jury panel of designers, developers and kitchen specialists came together to select the winners, and through the process were delighted with the attention to detail and high-quality outcome achieved on the Fitzroy Project.
It is a worthy winner and is a space that responds to the surrounding context and heritage, while bringing it into the modern day with luxurious inclusions.
