Kitchen & Bathroom Issue

Habitus 63 is arguably the most aspirational issue of the year with Kitchens & Bathrooms to dream about. Whether a family hub, an entertainer’s paradise or somewhere to grad a quick meal, how we live in and spend time in the kitchen is a very personal question that requires thought and an abundance of resources. Always the aspirational eye candy of design, we have some truly lovely kitchens from Greg Natale, YSG, Splinter Society, Sally Caroline and Studio Johnston. Bathrooms are just as important with Greg Natale, Studio Tate, YSG and Those Architects sharing some fabulous insights

Holiday Homeware

Eclectic, fresh, comfortable and homely, Home Base Collections creates
sustainably made objects to live a long life with. Lee Suckling finds
himself at home.

Utilising “very Kiwi” designs and materials, Napier-based Home Base Collections is developing a strong name for itself in the New Zealand fabric market.

“I wanted to pluck design elements out of the things New Zealanders are familiar with, without being blatant,” says Leanne Culy, creative genius behind the homeware brand. “I love the bush, and remember holidays based outdoors, so these were the inspirations behind the current designs.

“We also chose to have the fabrics produced with the least environmental impact; the yarns are grown using no herbicides or pesticides and are fully biodegradable.”

Home Base Collections fabrics were designed to fit into both modern and older, more relaxed environments – especially the holiday home or ‘bach’; an iconic place of leisure in Kiwi culture.

Holiday prints featuring anchors and caravans are prominent, creating “something about us, for us, about the way we live,” says Culy. “I hadn’t seen a lot of textiles doing that as they’re often based around international design trends.”

The star product for 2010 is Home Base Collections’ Zig Zag lamp base. “The sustainable New Zealand-made bases are a design from the 1950’s by [co-founder Brian Culy’s] father, and are made of New Zealand pine – to fit with our commitment to be as sustainable as possible,” Culy explains.

“It’s a product you can feel comfortable with in any environment for a long time to come.”
