Invasion, Escape; Aliens do it right!

British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare explores the turbulent history of immigration in Australia through his high flying machines and planet installations.

For the first time at Anna Schwartz Gallery, British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare will exhibit a collection of sculptural works and paintings, which reflect the dynamic discourse of post colonialism in Australia over the past three decades. Featuring several large- scale works including two ‘flying machines’ and a 19-metre long ‘planet’ installation, the exhibition assails the viewer into a ruptured space, drawing on mixed memories and past fears of alien occupation.

Shonibare, a Nigerian artist who lives in London and was born there in 1962, is known for his exploration of colonialism and post colonialism within a global context.  He explores the meaning of cultural and national definitions through a range of media from photography, painting, sculpture and more recently, film and performance. Shonibare was a Turner Prize nominee in 2004 and awarded the decoration of Member of the “Most Excellent Order of the British Empire”. The artist has since exhibited at the Venice Bienale and in major institutions worldwide.

See Invasion, Escape; Aliens do it right! from June 27 – August 11.
