Artist Luke Chiswell is back At The Above in Melbourne

From sand-casted bronze tools to studio furniture, disparate objects are subjects of exploration for Luke Chiswell as he returns to Melbourne’s At The Above gallery.

This month, multimedia artist Luke Chiswell is returning to At The Above – a gallery concept space by Space Between studio – with a two-week residency and exhibition showcasing ITEMS, opening on May 23.

Chiswell’s second At The Above show, ITEMS is a diverse series consisting of objects chosen, made, or re-worked by the artist – each serving as a catalyst for exploration and discovery, while incorporating a multitude of techniques in their creation.

Not limited by traditional categories of art, fashion or design, these items function as an archive of development. Capturing the evolution of studies, experiments, ideas and ways of working, each plays a pivotal role in the artist’s linear process of creating new work, while maintaining their own distinct identity. The pieces will be numbered sequentially, with some featuring stylistic variations denoted by editions.

In eschewing labels, Chiswell keeps expectations light, encouraging playful exploration. In essence, the ITEMS series unifies a wide range of studio experiments under one cohesive element: The ‘ITEM’.

“These items are reworked experiments that are found, studied and customised with the purpose of discovery – to find something new within my work,” explains Chiswell.

The exhibition will feature a mix of materials, including aluminium, bronze, wood and fabric – employing screen printing, sand casting, sewing, and engraving techniques.

Chiswell’s recent residencies include Unit 1 gallery London, Red Gate gallery Beijing, Tappan Collective Los Angeles, Maderas Village Nicaragua and Canberra Glassworks Australia.

Luke Chiswell — ITEMS opens on the 23rd May and runs until 5th June.
