Kitchen & Bathroom Issue

Kitchens and bathrooms are, arguably, the most consequential rooms in the home — and almost always the first to be considered. Whether approached through renovation or new build, their design has the power to recalibrate how a home is lived in and experienced. For this issue, our guest editor, Mardi Doherty, principal of Studio Doherty, explores what it truly means to transform these pivotal spaces — and why thoughtful design in kitchens and bathrooms delivers dividends far beyond the purely functional. Her insights both as an architect and as her own client give an open and honest account of the thinking behind creating a home.

Shepparton Art Museum presents Cornucopia

Shepparton Art Museum has announced its first major exhibition of 2016, the multidisciplinary art show Cornucopia.

Opened in late February, Cornucopia runs until May 22nd, 2016 and showcases works by both established and early career artists that utilise food and/or flora as artistic mediums or points of departure.

Cornucopia, from the Latin for Horn of Plenty, is a multidisciplinary and trans-historical exhibition that teases out various strands of investigation around the ideas of the production, consumption and distribution of food. The pieces also examine to metaphorical meanings, socio-cultural uses and representations of food within art history.

“Food, and its ethics, are very much topics of our times. What we consume, how it’s produced, and how it arrives at our table are realities of our every-day lives, “ says SAM’s Acting Director, Dr Rebecca Coates notes “Cornucopia touches on many of these themes: from food miles and sustainability to famine and lack, or genetic modification and the consequences of globalised production. The exhibition also explores cultural and religious food traditions and the significance of certain ingredients such as olive oil and salt. Located in country Victoria, SAM also celebrates those marvellous Australian institutions such as the CWA and their pursuit of the perfect asparagus roll and cup of tea.”

Exhibition Dates: Saturday 27 February 2016 to Sunday 22 May 2016.
