Although the television is an accepted part of the average family home, it has long been accepted as one of those necessarily unattractive appliances. As Plasmas and LCD technologies have advanced, has this centre of attention begun to develop its own design personality?
It’s looking promising with the launch of Sony’s latest Bravia LCD Televisions, where as much attention has been given to design as functionality. The sleek design of the Bravia NX series sees a shift in television thinking.
A big step forward in design for the consumer brand, the series offers a thin LCD screen reminiscent of a solid piece of black glass when turned off, and when on it offers the brilliant full HD picture we’ve come to expect.
However, it is the feature of the optional aluminium stand which takes this TV to a new level. When coupled with the ‘glass slab’ of the screen the result is a minimal, solid aesthetic so missing from other TVs on the market.
The television is also part of the new wave of internet-connected TVs, with WiFi access to Sony’s ‘Bravia Internet Content’ and ‘Internet Widgets’.
Let’s hope that these new TVs are a sign of things to come from Sony as consumers continue to value, and demand, a higher level of design in everyday objects.
