Kitchen & Bathroom Issue

Kitchens and bathrooms are, arguably, the most consequential rooms in the home — and almost always the first to be considered. Whether approached through renovation or new build, their design has the power to recalibrate how a home is lived in and experienced. For this issue, our guest editor, Mardi Doherty, principal of Studio Doherty, explores what it truly means to transform these pivotal spaces — and why thoughtful design in kitchens and bathrooms delivers dividends far beyond the purely functional. Her insights both as an architect and as her own client give an open and honest account of the thinking behind creating a home.

Affordability meets innovation & quality

Bathroom specification invariably involves difficult decisions – trade-offs between aesthetic ambition and what is technically possible; between products or materials that are incompatible with each other; and between what is perceived as the ‘best option’ and what stakeholders can afford. Budgetary constraints are an inescapable reality of this work.

The 120SCS linear drainage system

That said, there are instances where the best option does not come with a high price tag. Stormtech’s 120SCS linear drainage system stands as proof that innovation, quality and affordability can sometimes go hand in hand.

A dual-sided system with integrated shower screen support, it makes it possible for water to drain from both sides of the shower screen through a single drain body. Suitable for both enclosed and wall-hung shower screens, it ensures a simple, strong, and effective hold that can be relied upon to last over time.

On top of that, like all Stormtech products, the 120SCS linear drainage system is made from marine grade 316 stainless steel. Manufactured in Australia to a patented design, it is WaterMark certified and exceeds all relevant Australian Standards.

Fast installation, defect minimisation & improved finishes

The key feature of the 120SCS linear drainage system, and the feature that separates it from alternatives, is its capacity to remove water from both sides of the shower screen. An innovation that ranks alongside Stormtech’s invention of the linear drain, this means it can function as a bathroom’s only drain.

There is no need, in other words, for a secondary floor drain outside the shower recess. Any water thrown towards the bathroom door simply runs back to the single drain.

The benefits of this are significant. The first involves installation and labour requirements. Because a single drain body equates to a single waste penetration through the membrane, there are fewer interfaces that need to be correctly detailed. There is no need for complex falls or intricate tile cutting and large format tiles can be more easily incorporated.

Beyond this, the presence of a single bathroom drain is a plus from a design perspective. The 120SCS linear drainage system frees up space and delivers specifiers a level of flexibility that is otherwise simply not possible.

It removes the need for things like floor level changes and partitions, and in so doing, reduces the risk of defects. And, just as importantly, it makes the inclusion of step-free showers possible and therefore represents a step forward for accessibility.

The 120SCS linear drainage system is available in a choice of seven grate designs, including architectural wedgewire, tile insert and punched slot styles as well as a range of special finish options. On top of this, thanks to the fact that specifiers can choose made-to-length units or their own custom options, most domestic bathrooms can be comfortably accommodated.

Unobtrusive and designed with style at front of mind, the 120SCS linear system is a perfect blend of functional excellence, design flexibility and affordability.
