Kitchen & Bathroom Issue

Kitchens and bathrooms are, arguably, the most consequential rooms in the home — and almost always the first to be considered. Whether approached through renovation or new build, their design has the power to recalibrate how a home is lived in and experienced. For this issue, our guest editor, Mardi Doherty, principal of Studio Doherty, explores what it truly means to transform these pivotal spaces — and why thoughtful design in kitchens and bathrooms delivers dividends far beyond the purely functional. Her insights both as an architect and as her own client give an open and honest account of the thinking behind creating a home.

Subodh Gupta

Featured in Habitus 18, Indian-born Gupta works across mediums, creating striking installations.

Born in Khagaul, Bihar, India in 1964, Subodh Gupta has made a name for himself in the art world for his large sculptural installations. After 6 years of formal training in painting at the College of Arts and Crafts in Patna that Subodh Gupta had his first exhibition in 1986 at the ‘All India Youth Festival’ in Madras. After several artist grants, scholarships and awards – 26 years later – Subodh’s work can now be seen on varying international platforms.

This year he has already been a part of several group shows and recently had a solo exhibition entitled ‘Line of Control’ held at the Kiran Nadar Museum in New Delhi. In 2013, Gupta will exhibit another solo show at the Kunstmuseum Thun in Switzerland. Having exhibited all over the world, some of Gupta’s career highlights include representing his country at the Venice Biennale in 1995, exhibiting at the Museum of Modern Art and Guggenheim in New York, the Hayward Gallery and Serpentine Gallery in London, just to name a few, while more locally he has been a part of the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in 2009 held in Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art.
