Kitchen & Bathroom Issue

Kitchens and bathrooms are, arguably, the most consequential rooms in the home — and almost always the first to be considered. Whether approached through renovation or new build, their design has the power to recalibrate how a home is lived in and experienced. For this issue, our guest editor, Mardi Doherty, principal of Studio Doherty, explores what it truly means to transform these pivotal spaces — and why thoughtful design in kitchens and bathrooms delivers dividends far beyond the purely functional. Her insights both as an architect and as her own client give an open and honest account of the thinking behind creating a home.

Tréology

A young company drawing on a rich family tradition of working with timber, Tréology champions superb craftsmanship and the use of sustainable timber and up-cycling.

In Christchurch, in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island, artisan furniture-makers craft beautifully-fashioned bespoke furniture from truly sustainable timber.

With a condensed range spanning chairs, stools, tables and lights, the focus is very much on expressing a single, well-executed representative of each category rather than myriad alternatives.

The Umber Chair (pictured above) has been particularly successful, winning a Gold Award at the 2012 New Zealand Best Design Awards.  As Designer Richard Sampson says, “This chair’s distinctive angular profile was inspired by the contrasting angles of New Zealand’s Southern Alps. Designed to sit comfortably in its own space, the Umber Chair offers a low, laid-back sitting position for relaxed enjoyment.” Judges commented that the is an iconic, beautifully proportioned and elegantly constructed piece of timber furniture that has the potential to go on to become a New Zealand design ‘classic’.

Further examples of their work include the Gallery stool, which celebrates the natural aesthetic of rings in the timber, and the Emerge side table, which is made from the offcuts of ancient Kauri timber.
