The Life Outside Issue

Introducing the Life Outside issue of Habitus magazine. With life increasingly being absorbed into a digital space, there is never a more important moment to hold something tangible. In this context, the power of nature to have a physiological impact on our sense of wellbeing has never been more important. So how can we cultivate the benefits of the our natural environment in the most intimate of places – our homes? This was the question that helped to bring this issue of Habitus to life.

Design Hunter Q+A with Adam Jones

Fresh from the launch of Quercus & Co., Adam Jones shares his love of quirky, beautiful and comforting design favourites with Habitusliving.

Your name: Adam Jones

What you do: Run Quercus & Co. a Sydney-based wallpaper design and printing company.

Your latest project: Quercus & Co. recently launched its new collection Caravan. A gold chinoiserie-style scenic wallpaper for Luchetti Krelle that’s just been installed in the Treasury, Brisbane.

Who are three people that inspire/excite you:

1) Linnet Hannan, embroidery and knitting specialist. I’ve known Linnet since the early 80s, she’s worked with all the top fashion designers from Vivienne Westwood to Christian Lacroix and Julien MacDonald. I’m proud to say I once helped sew a few sequins onto an amazing butterfly gown she was making for Thierry Mugler and the corsetiere Mr Pearl. Worn on the runway by Jerry Hall in ‘Les Insectes’ runway show by Thierry Mugler 1997.

2) Faye Toogood, Innovative British designer who creates concept environments and interiors. Her work as a stylist for World of Interiors has always been exquisite.

3) Grace Coddington. Creative director at American Vogue. Another hard-working, talented woman. She also likes cats.

What is your favourite… Car/bike/plane/boat model: The Papillionaire classic Dutch-style bike made in Sydney

Chair model: Archie by Jardan. Next on the list to join my Marvin sofa

Residential space: Artist’s live-in studios: Margaret Olley or Francis Bacon!

Commercial space: White Rabbit Gallery in Chippendale is beautiful.

Decorative product: Catalina Estrada wallpaper collection

Functional product: Camera

Handmade good: A chunky terracotta bowl with a pale-blue glaze I found in a charity shop years ago, scrawled underneath is ‘Happy Xmas Mum’

Mass-produced good: Paper coffee cups

Meal: A cheddar cheese & tomato sandwich on white crusty bread… with a nice cup of tea and a good sit down. I feel guilty saying it.

Restaurant: Onde in Darlinghurst. Reliable, relaxed.

Drink: Lately it’s Vodka and cranberry

Bar: Local pubs: the Norfolk, the Woolpack

Item in your studio: Dignitet from Ikea. Wall-mounted stainless steel wires I’m using to peg up samples and works in progress.

Piece of technology: Hard to go past the iPad it just keeps getting better.

Historical figure: Quentin Crisp. Our society still has difficulty accepting differences let alone encouraging them. I would love to see more joy and flamboyance. Sexuality and gender is irrelevant.

Fictional character: Miss Havisham. Imagine a peep into her house…

Vice: Chocolate

Virtue: Early to bed

What does the term ‘Design Hunter’ mean to you? A person driven by the urge to surround themselves with beautiful things: both aesthetic and practical.
