Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

Bulgarian jeweller turns discarded inner tubes into edgy ‘wearables’.

Nikolay Sardamov’s jewellery is a fusion of the precious and the found. Repurposing bicycle inner tubes and combining them with precious metals, Sardamov explores what could best be described as playful industrial.

Sardamov will be visiting Australia next month to open an exhibition at metalab in Sydney, which will show an array of his beautiful jewellery.

The Bulgarian’s solo exhibition, Continuum, is the first Australian showing receiving much acclaim throughout Europe for his finely crafted silver works.

Trained in fine arts with a Masters in jewellery and metal, Sardamov aims not simply to create beautiful objects, but to challenge social norms, asking us to consider issues of environment, sustainability and mobility.

From 6 – 27 May 2010 Continuum will show works from The Secret Garden, Intersections, Bi-Re-Cycle and Soft Construction collections.

To coincide with Sardamov’s visit, metalab will also be holding a 1-day workshop exploring the re-working of bicycle inner tubes into jewellery. Participants will be given a range of different inner tubes and materials that, under Sardamov’s guidance, will be turned into unique contemporary ‘wearables’.

Continuum opens on 6 May from 6 – 9pm, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet Sardamov in person.
