Leading the Way – the INDE.Awards Ambassadors for 2021

Jason Sim & Hao Wang of SLAB10

The 2021 INDE.Award Ambassadors represent architecture and design at its best throughout the Indo-Pacific. The Ambassadors originate from a variety of countries that include India, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia and they are the definitive voice of the INDE.Awards in the region.

With peer recognition, experience and talent, those chosen each year to become INDE.Award ambassadors are leaders in their field of architecture and design. With a variety of expertise and a proven track record these men and women understand the intrinsic value of the INDE.Awards – the only Awards programme that encompasses the Indo-Pacific region – and they support the inclusive nature and connectivity the Awards provide.

This year there are eight dynamic and powerful practices and 14 individual practitioners who have been chosen as Ambassadors. Together they are supporting the INDE.Awards as representatives of the architecture and design communities in their particular country and, establishing, by example, that connection within our region is definitely alive and well.

Annabel and Marijine Vogel from Studio 11

In conversation with ambassadors from four practices – Goy Zhenru, Dessy Anggadewi and Sam Loetman of Goy Architects, Mark Healey from Bates Smart, David Flack and Mark Robinson from Flack Studio and Akshat Bhatt from Architecture Discipline – we asked them about the INDE.Awards from their perspective.

What makes the INDE.Awards special in your estimation?

Goy Architects: We are amazed by the quality and breadth of design works submitted to the INDE.Awards. It is exciting to see up and coming designers and projects that address the issues of our generation. We are encouraged by the care and passion demonstrated by designers/architects to make our world a better place for all.

Mark Healey: The INDE.Award programme is special because it differentiates itself from the other award programs by highlighting Australia’s influential position in the Asia Pacific, by looking through a wider, more diverse lens I think our world is richer and a better place.

Flack Studio: Voice, community and engagement are three pivotal components of great design, INDE effortlessly does all three with the focus on our Asia-Pacific design community, automatically anyone who attends, enters or reads about the INDE.Awards are welcomed into a community that’s forward thinking and inclusive.

Akshat Bhatt: Tools and technology will change but what will never change is the need for inspiring ideas and techniques.

Goy Architects’ Dessy Anggadewi, Zhenru Goy and Sam Loetman

As a platform targeted towards recognising innovative minds in the Indo-Pacific region, the INDE.Awards highlight the importance of regional culture, identity and sustainability in shaping contemporary architecture and design. In addition to giving a voice to creative thinkers, the Awards are special as they bring together communities and cement our shared goals of sustainable development and resilience.

As part of a regional awards program what are you looking forward to in the coming year as an ambassador perhaps connecting with practitioners in other countries, being a part of the program and being involved with the process?

Goy Architects: As proud ambassadors of the INDE.Awards 2021, we look forward to connecting further with our emerging regional designers and architects and hoping to see more regional works from the Southeast Asia region!

Mark Healey: The cross pollination of diverse ideas and design approaches is the most exciting thing about being involved.

Flack Studio: As an ambassador we’re looking forward to forging stronger relationships with the broader design community, while soaking up every part of the program.

Akshat Bhatt: I cannot be me without learning from you. In order to be human we must learn from others. We could not walk or speak without learning from the ones that surround us. The prospect of collaboration, introspection and debate with practitioners across the world excites me and I am looking forward to meaningfully contributing to the program in my role as an ambassador.

As an ambassador what would you like to say to the wider A & D community about the INDE.Awards and the inaugural INDE.Summit?

Goy Architects: We are excited to see the shortlist for the INDE Awards 2021. Do join us for a thought-provoking and progressive discussion at the inaugural INDE.Summit 2021 Conference!

Mark Healey: Get involved, and become an active participant in this programme, you never know where effort and reward will meet.

Flack Studio: NDE.Awards and INDE.Summit are like a canvas, paint and brushes – we all need just to jump in and make some masterpieces together, whether that be new or old collaborative relationships, points of view or the light bulb that will be the next project everyone wants to see, we’re looking forward to being a part of it!

Akshat Bhatt: Dialogue, be it regional or international, is integral to creating stronger communities. The INDE.Summit goes a step further by not only recognising the immense contribution of people in the Indo-Pacific architecture and design fraternity, but also provides a springboard for the cross-pollination of ideas – ideas that will shape our buildings and cities in the times to come.
