Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

Architects older and younger are invited to be part of a gathering at beautiful Awaroa Inlet, Abel Tasman National Park, for what will be a memorable weekend .

A celebration of place and culture, and a celebration both of legends in architecture from New Zealand and Australia, as well as the work of some younger practitioners doing interesting work – Ian Athfield, Richard Leplastrier, Kerry and Lindsay Clare, Drew Heath, Peter Stutchbury, convener Lindsay Johnston, and special guests – Patrick Clifford, Lindley Naismith, Julia Gatley (and more …..).

The weekend will combine walking the landscape, observing, sketching, a modest design problem and formal talks by the guest speakers – and lots of conversation meandering between Awaroa Lodge, Ath’s settlement at the other end of the grass landing strip, exploring beautiful Awaroa inlet and the existing settlements of extraordinary ‘baches’ that already exist.

Access will be by water taxi from Marahau, with charter coach connection from Nelson Airport departing 13.00 Thursday 18 September and returning to Nelson Airport by 15.00 Monday 22 September.

Accommodation and meals will be provided at Peppers Awaroa Lodge.
