The 'Bespoke' Issue

With Guest Editor Yasmine Ghoniem, we are launched headfirst into the world of unique and eclectic design. From architecture to interiors, there is nothing that can’t be enlivened with bespoke interventions. Granted, a stunningly beautiful home can be made by simply shopping for the best, but when the artist’s hand is introduced, some pure magic is possible. Whether it is an artwork or a new upholstery, a built-in component or a mosaic inlay, these gestures, whether bold or subtle, are what make the home unique.

Feldgrau by Andrzej Nowicki at Chapter House Lane

The Polish born artist’s arresting new collection evokes the Flemish style with its bleak, contemplative tableauxs. Claire Robertson takes a look.

Chapter House Lane presents Feldgrau, the latest collection of work from mixed media artist Andrzej Nowicki. Housed in a large window space aiming to inspire curiosity, the solo exhibition is in collaboration with Perimeter Books and Little King café who are launching an evolving series of small press art books and rare design publications.

Poland born with beginnings in South Africa and later years spent in New York City, Nowicki is currently based in Melbourne where his first show with Perimeter in 2011 followed from recent exhibitions in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Brooklyn.

His work, taken loosely from Dutch artist Pieter Bruegel’s ‘Hunters in the Snow’, captures a wintry expanse with jagged peaks and bleak silhouettes; a setting which invariably asks us to finish the story.

Nowicki’s mixed application of graphite, ink and oils create splinters of colour set against the cold backdrop of a crossing through the Alps. Bolded branches capped in white snow and flatly dotted figures make time imperceptible and blur our understanding of the real and imagined.

Feldgrau will be open this winter at Chapter House Lane  from Thursday June 7, and will run to July 1.
