Introducing the Life Outside issue of Habitus magazine. With life increasingly being absorbed into a digital space, there is never a more important moment to hold something tangible. In this context, the power of nature to have a physiological impact on our sense of wellbeing has never been more important. So how can we cultivate the benefits of the our natural environment in the most intimate of places – our homes? This was the question that helped to bring this issue of Habitus to life.

THE HOW-TO GUIDE FOR THE DESIGNER RUGS 2015 EVOLVE COMPETITION

Designer Rugs Call For Submissions is now officially open! But are you eligible to compete, how can you do it and what is in it for you?


 

The Designer Rugs EVOLVE Awards are back in 2015, and if you are a full time professional architect, interior designer or interior decorator in Australia or New Zealand, the EVOLVE Awards are offering you some amazing opportunities!

But what is actually involved? Well basically, you will have the chance to:

  • Design a custom rug of your own creative
  • Have your rug design included in the ID COLLECTION 2015/2016
  • Be in the running to win a share of over $20,000 in prizes including a trip to Milan 2016.

 

(The eight selected finalist rugs will join the Designer Rugs’ ID COLLECTION 2015/2016.)

 Eight (8) designs will be released as part of the Designer Rugs ID Collection 2015/2016.  The ID Collection will be sold alongside Designer Rugs designer collections including Akira Isogawa, Dinosaur Designs and Catherine Martin to name a few.

SO, AM I ELIGIBLE?

EVOLVE is open to actively-working professionals engaged in the interiors and architectural industry:

  1. Architects
  2. Interior Designers
  3. Interior Decorators

 

Submissions are only accepted from individuals, collectives or design partnerships are not eligible – so no tag-team efforts, people.

Prizes are awarded as a whole, and will not be divided into sections. And entrants must be Australian or New Zealand permanent residents/citizens at the time of entry, and must fit one of the three categories detailed above.

SOUNDS GREAT! SO WHAT IS THE BREIF EXACTLY?

Entrants are invited to submit up to a maximum of three (3) designs intended for a 200 x 300 cm or 250cm diameter rug.

Your designs should be innovative, inspiring and original and suitable for residential and commercial interiors.

Rug Design Specifications:

The designs will be hand tufted in New Zealand Wool with the option of bamboo silk detailing. Designs can be produced in cut pile and loop pile with the option of carving to design details. A maximum of 6 colours per design. Line work should be no finer than 1cm thick (scale 1:20 = 0.5mm). Shapes should be no smaller 4cm diameter (scale 1:20 = 2.0cm) to retain their definition.

Design can be produced both digitally or hand rendered and uploaded into PDF format provided. Designs produced in digital programs such as; Illustrator, Photoshop, Corel Draw, etc, must be published to PDF for entry. Designs that are hand rendered, drawn, painted, etc, will be required to be scanned or photographed and submitted as a PDF.

BUT WHO IS JUDGING MY WORK, AND WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING FOR?

The illustrious panel of industry heavyweights is made up of Designer Rugs Cahirman, Eli Tal, Designer Rugs Director, Yosi Tal, futurespace Design Director and past-EVOLVE Winner, Gavin Harris, Indesign Media Asia Pacific Chairman & CEO, Raj Nandan with two more exciting industry judges to be announced soon!

The judging panel will consider submitted designs (received by the closing date) and rate each on: the overall concept and originality of design; Innovation: judges will assess if submitted designs bring a new concept to finished rugs; Commercial viability of the rug design; Demonstrated understanding of the handmade rug construction process

Designer Rugs reserve the right to support the Judges’ decisions as final.

Judging is conducted anonymously, in three phases:

  1. Shortlist – 100 designs selected from entries (received by the closing date).
  2. Judging of top 25 designs, with the eight (8) finalist designs selected for manufacturing.
  3. Private judging on event night to select the overall winner.

 

But if you feel like you’re more a designer of the people, fear not! EVOLVE 2015 will also host a People’s Choice component to the program.

Prizes to the value of $1,000 RRP (Designer Rug voucher) will be awarded to both the designer of the design nominated as favourite by the People’s Choice online ballot and one lucky person who voted for that rug. Finally, Each of the Top 25 Finalists will receive a certificate of merit.

EXCELLENT! BUT WHAT DO I GET OUT OF PARTICIPATING IN THE PROGRAM? 

We have to say, the 2015 EVOLVE Awards Prize Pool is pretty damn sweet.

Six (6) successful designers will receive:

  • Design Fee of $1000 (plus GST) cash
  • Their design featured in the Designer Rugs’ ID Collection 2015/2016
  • 5% commission on sale price of rug(s) for one (1) year

One (1) Runner-up will receive:

  • Their 200x300cm or 250cm Diametre rug to the value of up to $3,950 RRP
  • Design Fee of $1000 (plus GST) cash
  • Their design featured in the Designer Rugs’ ID Collection 2015/2016
  • 5% commission on sale price of rug(s) for one (1) year

One (1) over-all winner will receive:

  • Return flights from your nearest capital city to Milan to attend Salone de Mobile

2016 including 3 nights’ accommodation (4 star)*

  • One (1) admission ticket to attend Salone de Mobile 2016
  • Their 200x300cm or 250cm Diametre rug to the value of up to $3,950 RRP
  • Design Fee of $1000 (plus GST) cash
  • Their design featured in the Designer Rugs’ ID Collection 2015/2016
  • 10% commission on sale price of rug(s) for one (1) year

WHAT ARE THE RULES?

A real designer thrives on limitations. And EVOLVE 2015 does have some Entry Terms & Conditions:

  1. Up to a maximum of three (3) designs per entrant is accepted.
  2. Completed rugs will be either 200 x 300 cm, or 250 cm diameter.
  3. Maximum of 6 colours per design.
  4. Designs must allow for colour changes by Designer Rugs.
  5. Composition: hand-tufted rugs will be produced from New Zealand Wool with no more than 20% Bamboo silk detailing.
  6. Submitted designs must be scale 1:20 and submitted as a PDF (through the Evolve website) – no larger than 2MB per design.
  7. PDF’s to be saved as, Entry Code, Entrants Name, Design Title. E.g.: 0031 John Smith – Evolve
  8. By submitting the design to the competition, and completing the entry form, the designer agrees to these terms and conditions.
  9. Only one design per entrant will be eligible to become part of the ID Collection 2015/2016.
  10. Designs submitted that do not meet the above criteria will not be eligible for judging.
