Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

Kumiko

By Apato

If you ever visit Japan, you will probably encounter the fantastic craftsmanship that can be seen in the traditional art of Kumiko screens. The wooden screens are often used as privacy screens and or room dividers and can be very simple or consist of incredibly intricate geometric patterns. The Kumiko cabinets combine semi see though screens and a very well crafted cabinet to create an interesting composition. Placing lights inside will give a warm feeling to the room, making the whole cabinet into a lamp of sorts. Manufactured in the furniture producing town of Morodomi, ARIAKE is a new, exciting Japanese brand that has brought together designers from different countries with a common respect for Japanese culture and woodworking. The expansive collection is available in a variety of options, and includes unique finishes such as sumi and indigo dye.
