Kitchen & Bathroom Issue

Kitchens and bathrooms are, arguably, the most consequential rooms in the home — and almost always the first to be considered. Whether approached through renovation or new build, their design has the power to recalibrate how a home is lived in and experienced. For this issue, our guest editor, Mardi Doherty, principal of Studio Doherty, explores what it truly means to transform these pivotal spaces — and why thoughtful design in kitchens and bathrooms delivers dividends far beyond the purely functional. Her insights both as an architect and as her own client give an open and honest account of the thinking behind creating a home.

Wing Lux Chairs

By Apato

Inspired by the beauty and shapes of nature, Sadogawa employs curved, flowing lines and shadows to create a sculptural look and feeling of mass. There are no straight lines in the Wing series, and even the triangular elements— which represent the vitality of nature—are rounded. The Wing chair conjures the image of a graceful bird. The minimalist design aids in the chair’s overall comfort, with subtle curves that fit perfectly to the shape of the body. The backrest, formed using highly advanced equipment technology, creates the compound curvatures rarely available. The solid wood is routed out by a series of successive etchings to carve out the multiple dimensional curves from a single block of wood. Available in a number of finishes, the wing series chairs feature sophisticated yet subtle finger joints, an expressed detail of beauty and strength.
