The Life Outside Issue

Introducing the Life Outside issue of Habitus magazine. With life increasingly being absorbed into a digital space, there is never a more important moment to hold something tangible. In this context, the power of nature to have a physiological impact on our sense of wellbeing has never been more important. So how can we cultivate the benefits of the our natural environment in the most intimate of places – our homes? This was the question that helped to bring this issue of Habitus to life.

Car Desire from Detroit

Brisbane’s Artisan explores transportation design with their latest exhibition, driving in soon from the United States.

It’s a bit of a departure for Brisbane’s Artisan (formerly known as Craft Queensland), known for their craft, art and design exhibitions, but their latest exhibition is bound to spark some interest.

Industrial Desire presents some amazingly detailed automotive design concepts from Detroit – birthplace of Ford Motor Company. The exhibition of quarter-scale models comes to Brisbane from the College of Creative Studies in Detroit – a partnership born out of a link between the College and Artisan’ Exhibition Curator, Kirsten Fitzpatrick.

We spoke to Kirsten who explained that her father was actually once the Chair of Industrial Design at the College, while the current Dean, Imre Molnar, is also an Australian Designer.

There will be 9 high-density models on display complete with automotive paint finishes. Kirsten explains that their scale was a bit of a surprise: “I pictured them to be small until a semi-trailer turned up with them.”

The show aims to bring these innovative car concepts to an Australian audience that rarely is exposed to them, as well as developing ties with the College. “It’s about Detroit too, that amazing crumbling city that’s still churning out these amazing futuristic designs,” Kirsten says.

You can visit the exhibition after it opens on 10 June and can catch a Talk by Curator and College of Creative Studies graduate Leon Fitzpatrick on Saturday 12 June from 2-3pm.
