Gascoigne and King Luxury Candles

Behind the door of a small terrace in Sydney’s Surry Hills, two software
professionals have turned a life-long passion into a reality.

Bronwyn Gascoigne and Dean King sell software by day, but in the evenings and on weekends they focus their energies on something altogether less technological.

After learning of the destructive nature of the palm wax industry – deforestation, exploitation of workers and impact on fauna – Bronwyn and Dean wanted to explore a new way to produce candles that didn’t use palm wax.

For over a year now, the pair has been producing luxury scented candles made from 100% soy-based wax. “I thought, we could make candles, and make them properly, in a way that doesn’t tax the environment,” Bronwyn explains.

“They were really just for ourselves at first, because we didn’t want all the guilt associated with palm wax.”

In a year, the Gascoigne & King brand has grown significantly, with a select handful of retailers across Australia chosen to stock the unique range of scented candles.

“It all started through our own desire to have less of an impact on the environment and it evolved into people saying ‘these candles are fantastic, why don’t you sell them?’,” Dean says.

“We hand make every single candle ourselves right here in our house and we hand-deliver them to our customers in Sydney.”

Bronwyn and Dean have been growing the brand slowly, expanding by nurturing newfound relationships, and ultimately friendships, with retailers and customers.

With 10 scents currently, Gascoigne & King plan to extend the range and move into other products such as soap and bath salts. You can buy the luxury scented candles online or visit one of the 12 stockists.
