The Life Outside Issue

Introducing the Life Outside issue of Habitus magazine. With life increasingly being absorbed into a digital space, there is never a more important moment to hold something tangible. In this context, the power of nature to have a physiological impact on our sense of wellbeing has never been more important. So how can we cultivate the benefits of the our natural environment in the most intimate of places – our homes? This was the question that helped to bring this issue of Habitus to life.

Fiam Italia from Space

Fiam Italia’s innovative skills with glass are probably best demonstrated by the Ghost chair designed by Cini Boeri and Tomu Katayanagi in 1987 and made from a single piece of toughened 12 millimetre-thick glass. Simple and incredibly engaging, it’s a design that has slipped through the decades without aging.

Established in 1973 by Vittorio Livi. Fiam Italia is grounded in traditional glass making techniques. Their commitment to research and developing new technologies and materials now gives their designers the flexibility to create pieces previously impossible to realize, and in addition enables clients to have pieces created in customised sizes and colours to meet their needs. The Fiam Italia collection includes designs by a wide and varied group of designers from Ron Arad to Tord Boontje and Danny Lane, as well as well-known Frenchman Philippe Starck who designed the Caadre mirror in 1996 that is one of the group’s most recognisable and popular pieces.

New to Fiam Italia in 2012 are the flexible LLT desks designed for the home and the office, Italian designer Rodolfo Dordoni’s Luxor Bistrot side table that pays homage in form to the work of the great Eileen Gray and the Macramé tables designed by Lucid Pevere which feature a hand-interwoven spun glass base that is textured and flickers beautifully in the light. The Macramé collection, were the 2012 winner of the Young&Design award for best project of the year. Previous winners of this prestigious award included luminaries such as Cini Boeri, Vico Magistretti, Enzo Mari, Achille Castiglioni, Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, Richard Sapper and Marco Zanuso.

Fiam Italia’s latest collection is available from Space Furniture.
