‘Hirameki’ by Akira Isogawa for Designer Rugs

Industry leading Designer Rugs, established in 1986, continues its successful collaboration with one of Australia’s most recognised and feted designers, Akira Isogawa.

The dynamic synergy between Designer Rugs’ expertise and Akira’s trademark breathtaking yet understated designs has been actualised in their third collaboration. In this collaboration – named Hirameki(meaning ‘Inspiration’) Akira’s striking creations reference his current catwalk collections. Akira’s love of exploring the juxtaposition between his traditional Japanese heritage and the celebration of Australia’s love of colour has translated into some exquisite pieces.

The collaboration with Akira Isogawa for Designer Rugs started as a limited edition collection in 2005 and was an exercise in balance and harmony through colour. Public demand insisted on a second collection, where Akira further explored the possibilities of realising his beautifully colourful creations in the unique medium of rug design.

More ornate and internationally inspired than his preceding collections, Akira’s vision for Hirameki’s designs include elaborate textiles and new methods of rendering his designs, and are draw heavily on fabrics found during his travels.

The innovation and beauty demonstrated in his previous Designer Rug collections has been amplified with the introduction of bamboo as a renewable material in Akira’s Ayame and Shibori designs. The beauty of the New Zealand wool rugs is complemented with the more durable, resilient and environmentally sustainable attributes of bamboo.

Ayame and Kiku were the culmination of integrating silk block kimono fabric designs with traditional Japanese floral motifs of Iris and Chrysanthemums.

Shibori, meaning twist, is a unique tie-dye textile, originating from Japan, featuring a floral and wave motif.

Batik is exquisite yet playful, based on Bali’s traditional water resistance dying technique, whereby wax is used to hand paint on the cloth before it is dyed.

The craftsmanship of the Akira for Designer Rugs collection is unmistakable, with every rug in the collection meticulously hand made to the standard size of 200×300 cm with two rugs in a standard size of 250cm diameter. Additionally they can be custom coloured and sized to suit any interior space, whether commercial or residential.

The Akira rug collection can be found in high-end residences globally and have been commissioned for luxury commercial spaces including the newly opened The Darling Hotel, Star Casino, Sydney.

Available exclusively from Designer Rugs showrooms. The collection is priced from $4950.00
