Kitchen & Bathroom Issue

Kitchens and bathrooms are, arguably, the most consequential rooms in the home — and almost always the first to be considered. Whether approached through renovation or new build, their design has the power to recalibrate how a home is lived in and experienced. For this issue, our guest editor, Mardi Doherty, principal of Studio Doherty, explores what it truly means to transform these pivotal spaces — and why thoughtful design in kitchens and bathrooms delivers dividends far beyond the purely functional. Her insights both as an architect and as her own client give an open and honest account of the thinking behind creating a home.

Weaving colourful narratives of Egypt’s faraway lands and pharaonic past with fictional flair, the inaugural rug collaboration between Tappeti fine handcrafted rugs + carpets and YSG – REAL MAJIK – is a tangible tale of hand-knotted and hand-tufted artisanship.

Both timeless and ecologically sensitive, each rug incorporates a mix of fibres. Combinations of artsilk, hemp, Tibetan highland wool and nettle feature in the intricate hand-knotted rugs to reveal an exquisite level of pattern detail, whilst New Zealand wool and artsilk articulate the hand-tufted pieces to achieve various lustrous textures through a mix of loop and cut piles. Their rich hues – from amethyst and garnet to shimmering toffee – are created through traditional batch-dying for each rug to minimise chemical waste and provide limitless opportunities for unique colouration.
