The 'Bespoke' Issue

With Guest Editor Yasmine Ghoniem, we are launched headfirst into the world of unique and eclectic design. From architecture to interiors, there is nothing that can’t be enlivened with bespoke interventions. Granted, a stunningly beautiful home can be made by simply shopping for the best, but when the artist’s hand is introduced, some pure magic is possible. Whether it is an artwork or a new upholstery, a built-in component or a mosaic inlay, these gestures, whether bold or subtle, are what make the home unique.

Chic, Cool, Collins

Australia

Adelaide’s cocktail scene has received a dramatic boost with the arrival of the The Collins bar, a richly detailed and moodily atmospheric locale.

Project architects Woods Bagot were presented with a brief to create a world-class bar and re-energise a landmark corner in the Adelaide CBD to entice both international and interstate visitors as well as locals. Furthermore, as the first stage in a whole ground floor master plan for the Hilton hotel, the resulting space had to sustain the aesthetics and tone of its broader context.

The site prior “The Collins” was a prominent bar in the 80’s/90’s called Charlie’s Bar, a highly popular local institution that still holds a soft spot in the heart of the local community. This was doubled to incorporate a separate club lounge in addition to the exiting front bar.

The bespoke nature of the design elements, for instance the central tables and feature door handles by Simon Zappia from Aura Objects, make The Collins a rich and timeless establishment that underscores the prestige of the Hilton brand.

The textured, coherent material palette of stained, wire-brushed pine battens, Pietra grey marble, brass ceiling Fins, smoked mirror, black leather panels and custom carpet speaks to the discernment and attention to detail of the designers, and provides a compelling visual and tactile environment.
