Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

Coastal House by Venn Architects

Australia

Set on a sweeping hill in coastal Victoria, the Coastal House demonstrates how harmoniously architecture can sit within its surroundings.

The sculptured contours of the roof the Coastal House bring the residence to life, seeming to sail over the landscape, while the low horizontal profile minimises the statement it makes on the stunning natural surroundings and scenery.

Designed by Geoff Challis of Venn Architects, the house is generous in its space, designed to accommodate an extended family on holidays.  Internally, the highlight of the house is the curved, timber-lined ceiling that reflects the curve of the surrounding hills.  The landscape is also referenced in the rammed earth wall, which spans building’s length, giving natural simplicity, solidity and texture to an otherwise minimalist space.

Throughout, the materials and fittings are natural and minimal, reflecting the tone of the landscape. The occasional quirky touch, like door handles made from iron nails, add an element of surprise and hint at the rural setting of the house.

The heroes of this house are the Mornington Peninsula landscape, the sea, and the sky that surrounds it, which can be viewed from every room at every angle. The Coastal House a place for a family to come together and celebrate – a beautiful house in beautiful surroundings.
