The 'Future' Issue

Frills and Fantasies

Singapore

Going a step beyond good food and service, the New Majestic Hotel in Singapore
titillates the senses, whets the appetite for novelty and begs the
guest to return for more. Madhavi Tumkur reports.

Madhavi Tumkur writes for habitusliving.com from Singapore

If there is one thing that travellers will cherish most about any destination, it is unexpected surprises. But at the New Majestic Hotel they are quite naturally expected.

Converting a block of old shop houses, hotelier and a man of imagination Loh Lik Peng preserved not just the structure but the era too through carefully collected objects such as Compton ceiling fans, vintage baths, old lights salvaged from the shipyard, colonial furniture and even laying bare the old ceiling in the lobby that bears its ancestry to 1928.

These have been deftly complemented with chaise lounges, designer lamps and chandeliers, contemporary art and sculpture, luxury linen and toiletries and some of the other in-room indulgences – Nespresso machines, Bose stereos and iPod docks to name a few.

Each of its 30 rooms was designed and named by local artists, fashion designers and film personalities and reflect the many moods and muses.

The Loft Room for instance makes use of the high ceiling and takes the bed to lofty heights while the guest lies, counting painted sheep in the ceiling’s canvas. The kaleidoscopic Mirror Room is for the naughty or the Narcistic while the Aquarium Room celebrates bathing through a glass-encased bathtub that is placed right in the middle of the room.

Even swimming in the outdoor pool adds to the whimsical allure with its portholes in the floor that peek straight inside the hotel’s Majestic Restaurant, a level below.

New Majestic creates an experience beyond the ordinary. Just leave your preconceptions at the door and you will be amply rewarded.

New Majestic is a member of Design Hotels chain that consists of unique and individually-designed hotels around the world.
