Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

Horizon Habitats: It’s a Winner!

Australia

This light saturated Sydney home by Mackenzie Pronk, Kaintoch and Arent & Pyke has won the Master Builders Association of NSW Excellence in Housing Award.

The five bedroom, six bathroom Vaucluse house combines the designs of architects Mackenzie Pronk, and Kaintoch Design Studio, with interiors by Arent & Pyke, who worked with builders at Horizon Habitats at different stages. Horizon took out the Master Builders Association of NSW Excellence in Housing Award in the Contract Houses category for the completed home.

As for how the project came together, Kaintoch were engaged late in the home’s conception, and took on the task of curating the documentation and finalising construction and interior details. Working with the existing structural frame of Mackenzie Pronk, Kaintoch partnered with various consultants across the project, right down to the furniture and styling by Kriszta Gabor from Space Furniture.

Luxury internal finishes include a travertine feature wall, timber floors throughout, and a combination of natural stone and handmade tile slabs. The home is operated via Dynalite Smart Home – a complete automation system, which enables the residents to efficiently control settings including energy usage, security and lighting.
