Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

Invisible Forces

Australia

The latest exhibition at Sydney’s metalab gallery explores the power of nature through several jewellery designs.

There’s rarely a day goes by that we aren’t inspired by jewellers and their work. Jewellery represents that wonderful nexus of art and design, functionality and aesthetics. While, without photography, we’d find it so hard to tell the stories we tell. In fact, the photographer is almost always a storyteller.

So when we heard about the next exhibition at metalab, we were happy to give a shout out.

Amazing jeweller Linda van Niekerk (who we met recently over here) will collaborate with photographer Peter Whyte, who seek inspiration from each other’s work.

“The conceptual framework of Invisible Forces was formed around an exploration of the hidden powers of the natural world,” explains metalab’s Nina Cueva.

From the forces of movement that shape the surface of the sea, to the ripples on the surface of a pond disturbed by a stone and the bending of the grass by the wind, these natural forces are inspiration for both artists.

The juxtaposition of photography and jewellery is countered by a similarly limited colour palette, and of course, the unique shapes inspired by nature.

The exhibition open on 7 July at 6pm – to attend, RSVP to [email protected]
