The 'Future' Issue

Habitus #64 Welcome to the HABITUS ‘Future’ and ‘Habitus House of the Year’ Issue. We are thrilled to have interior designer of excellence, Brahman Perera, as Guest Editor and to celebrate his Sri Lankan heritage through an interview with Palinda Kannangara and his extraordinary Ek Onkar project – divine! Thinking about the future, we look at the technology shaping our approach to sustainability and the ways traditional materials are enjoying a new-found place in the spotlight. Profiles on Yvonne Todd, Amy Lawrance, and Kallie Blauhorn are rounded out with projects from Studio ZAWA, SJB, Spirit Level, STUDIOLIVE, Park + Associates and a Lake House made in just 40 days by the wonderful Wutopia Lab, plus the short list for the Habitus House of the Year!

Klapsons Singapore

Singapore

Another design-driven hotel from Singapore city with a little bit of
personality.

If you’re the sort of person who can’t stand a drab hotel, then you’ll be right at home at the new Klapsons hotel in Singapore’s CBD.

The ‘Boutique Hotel’, designed by Italy’s Sawaya & Moroni, is a world away from the cookie-cutter approach to hotel design we’ve all been subjected to at some in the past.

Klapsons’ guestrooms have been individually designed, given their own identity. While the lobby and common areas have been given a touch of ‘bling’, with elements such as the massive steel sphere that forms the reception area. But there’s an equal measure of personality delivered in the form of elegant finishes in the guest rooms – preventing an ‘over-themed’ aesthetic.

Transformed from a commercial building, the hotel’s past is now unrecognisable, replaced with a certain quirky “timelessness”.

There are, of course, all the features we’ve come to expect from design-focused hotels from Wi-Fi access and coffee machines to the 1st floor restaurant, Lucas, serving contemporary ‘western cuisine’, accompanied by an alfresco bar and lounge.

Let’s hope that Klapsons is a further sign of a shift away from the bland world of travel towards hotels that we’d be happy to rest our travel-weary heads.

Klapsons is a member of the Design Hotels™.
