The 'Bespoke' Issue

With Guest Editor Yasmine Ghoniem, we are launched headfirst into the world of unique and eclectic design. From architecture to interiors, there is nothing that can’t be enlivened with bespoke interventions. Granted, a stunningly beautiful home can be made by simply shopping for the best, but when the artist’s hand is introduced, some pure magic is possible. Whether it is an artwork or a new upholstery, a built-in component or a mosaic inlay, these gestures, whether bold or subtle, are what make the home unique.

The Park Pod Chennai

India

We take a look at a funky new hotel in India’s Chennai where a
collaboration between Indian creatives has yielded a Design Hunter gem.

This has to be the funkiest little hotel we’ve seen so far from India. The Park Pod Chennai is a neat collaboration between luxury design shop, Evoluzione (Atul Malhotra and Vikram Phadke), and Priya Paul of The Park Hotels.

Over just two levels the trio has created a modern Indian retreat in glass and concrete. The word gets overused (especially when it comes to hotels!), but the Park Pod really does offer an oasis.

The interiors are a journey in red, black and white, with beautiful sketch murals in each room by Indian brand the Play Clan, as well as high-end furniture design, from Louis Ghost chairs to B&B tables and custom linen and cushions by Abraham & Thakore.

It’s almost hard to believe that this calm little corner exists in the middle of Chennai, but at night The Park Pod comes alive with moody, mysterious lighting, poolside shenanigans and a DJ turning up the heat.

There are two offerings for food and drink come in the form of the Absolute bar and the trendy Italia restaurant, or you can just relax by the red-mosaic pool by day and check out all that Chennai has to offer when the sun goes down.

It’s so great to see all these beautiful design-focussed hotels opening up in India – making the design hunt even easier, more relaxed and so much fun.
