This weekend marks the final few days of the 2011 Art Month Sydney program, so we thought we’d draw your attention to one of our favourite exhibitions and a talk with the artist this weekend.
Petrina Hicks’ photography is startlingly real, polished and almost perfect – that is until you notice the open wounds, faces covered with cat fur and little girls holding ‘naked’ cats.

In her latest exhibition, at Sydney’s Stills Gallery, titled Beautiful Creatures, Hicks asks us to ponder these seemingly perfect images that confront us with their bizarre and disturbing elements and subjects.

There is also an amazing 6-minute-long looping video on show, called The Chrysalis (still image of film at top). The gallery explains: “The cliché imagery of flowers, so fresh they gleam with dew, is perverted as Hicks’ model lavishly licks a bloom, her perfectly dripping saliva captured in glorious detail and high resolution”.
But you want to know more right? Well, you’re in luck; this weekend you can attend a talk with the artist herself when Hicks presents as part of Art Month. The talk will give attendees a chance to learn more about collecting photography.
We can definitely recommend getting along this weekend or heading to Stills for the exhibition before 9 April.
