Kitchen & Bathroom Issue

Kitchens and bathrooms are, arguably, the most consequential rooms in the home — and almost always the first to be considered. Whether approached through renovation or new build, their design has the power to recalibrate how a home is lived in and experienced. For this issue, our guest editor, Mardi Doherty, principal of Studio Doherty, explores what it truly means to transform these pivotal spaces — and why thoughtful design in kitchens and bathrooms delivers dividends far beyond the purely functional. Her insights both as an architect and as her own client give an open and honest account of the thinking behind creating a home.

Street Art Auction

Australia

Sydney street artists come together for disadvantaged youth in Western
Sydney.

You can pick up your own piece of original street art in Sydney this week. But you won’t have to take down a wall to do so.

The 4 artists – Ben Frost, Shannon Crees, ‘Beastman’ and ‘Phibs’ – are donating their works to raise money for Information and Cultural Exchange (ICE), a charity for disadvantaged youth in Western Sydney.

The works – on large 2.4m x 1m panels – were created as part of the Project 5 live art event late last year.

“The public responded so positively to the works that were produced at our live art event. We can’t wait to see the response from our corporate and art buyer audience at the auction,” says Abigail Campion from Cockle Bay Wharf, the co-organisers of Project 5.

“Street art has flourished globally with artists such as Banksy and Fafi gaining enormous following and exposure,” says aMBUSH Gallery’s Bill Dimas. “The Australian industry is also recognising the cultural significance and value of its own talent and we are seeing an increasing demand commercially for street and urban artworks.”

These collaborative works use graffiti, collage, photorealism and sign-writing. The auction will be conducted by Anne Phillips of Bay East Auctions on Thursday 20 May 2010 at The Star Court, Darling Park, Sydney.

RSVP at the Project 5 website.
