The 'Bespoke' Issue

With Guest Editor Yasmine Ghoniem, we are launched headfirst into the world of unique and eclectic design. From architecture to interiors, there is nothing that can’t be enlivened with bespoke interventions. Granted, a stunningly beautiful home can be made by simply shopping for the best, but when the artist’s hand is introduced, some pure magic is possible. Whether it is an artwork or a new upholstery, a built-in component or a mosaic inlay, these gestures, whether bold or subtle, are what make the home unique.

Suzhou, China, Hangzhou Shihe Design practice has created Suzhou Tongli Villa, a residential escape with thoughtful materials and an eminently peaceful garden.

Completed in January 2025, Suzhou Tongli Villa comprises 450 square metres of beautiful materials including slate, teak flooring and rammed earth.

The designers explain the project poetically: “The deepest joy in the world: In the fallen time, there is a home, and what I long for is a place where I can slow down my breathing and settle my emotions. The courtyard is quiet, watching the light move on the ground, flowers fall in between, the door is not closed, and the wind comes in naturally. Looking up, there were two walls of plain mud, with a faint gray shadow; deep down, there is a warm pine wood that neatly stores the noise.”
