The Park Hotel, Hyderabad

India

Locally-inspired aesthetics, computer modeling and ecological sensitivity come together in India’s gem and textile capital.

Inspired by it’s host city’s rich gem, jewelry and  textile traditions, The Park Hotel Hyderabad fuses old and new in a bold, innovative design.

Sitting on the lip of the Hussain Sagar, the hotel’s complex volumes, intricately detailed surfaces and futuristic nocturnal lighting make it a striking sight. The hotels facade draws on the iconic Nizam jewelry collection and is composed of perforated and embossed metal screens. Acclaimed US architects Skidmore, Owings and Merrill have fine-tuned the opacity of this cladding to balance privacy with luminosity in indoor spaces, and high-performance glazing ensures acoustic tranquility in all guest rooms. The alternating fluid and angular lines of the structure are also the result of digital assistance, designed to maximize direct sunlight without compromising volume.

The hotel’s interiors, executed in a palette of silver, gold and precious gems, further reflect the city’s artisanal traditions, and surface decorations incorporate local designs. The structure encloses a central courtyard, a versatile outdoor area hosting al fresco restaurant seating, private dining areas and the signature three dimensional swimming pool. Sitting three stories above ground level it capitalizes on the lakeside panorama.

The Park Hotel Hyderabad is also at the forefront of environmentally friendly design, boasting the first LEED Gold Certificate for a Hotel in India in recognition of it’s energy and water efficiency and on-site waste management. As Roger Duffy, SOM’s Partner in Charge of the project, says, “This building signals our commitment to creating a design that simultaneously felt at home among the exuberant vernacular architecture of Hyderabad, while incorporating the latest sustainable strategies and technologies.”
