Vintage Modern Issue

The breadth and scope of Habitus has always been extraordinary. With how we live at heart of every issue, we have stepped it up with Guest Editor David Flack of Flack Studio shaking the ‘how’ and looking at new ways to make a house a home. With Vintage Modern as the issues theme, we look at the way iconic design has stayed with us, how daring pieces from the past can add the wow factor and how architecture and good design defy the pigeon hole of their era.

Letting your guard down in the name of art

The waterside suburbs of Millers Point and Walsh Bay have a
rich working class history.

Now eight sites across Millers Point will undergo a subtle
transformation at street level, as part of the Unguarded Moments creation for
the Art & About Festival Sydney. Staged from 23 September – 28 October, the
temporary series of projections is currently being co-produced by researcher Sarah
Barns and graphics studio Killanoodle.

Sarah Barns brings a wealth of knowledge to the project,
thanks to her recently completed phD in Public History at UTS. Redfern graphics
studio Killanoodle adds an eye-catching design aesthetic, determined to incite
popular intrigue.

“For us it’s more of a celebration of the social
history of the neighbourhood, rather than a review of the area’s urban
development. We are interested in the faces of the past looking out at you to
the present,” says Sarah Barns who is co-producing the event.

Local ‘pointers’ can expect to see twilight projections
creeping over eight sites from the evening of 23 September.

Drawing on Sydney’s archival documentary films and
photographs from The National Film & Sound Archive of Australia, characters
and ideas will be brought to life on buildings. The brain-child of Sarah Barns
and Michael Killalea at Killanoodle, Unguarded Moments aims to push viewers to
experience the history of local sites in a new way.

“We have mined footage from the wharves in the 1950s to
bring some of these ‘unguarded’ characters to the street art,” she says.

“Millers Point is still home to families who have
lived in the areas for 3 or 4 generations.

We hope our research reveals historical data and
sentiments that are pertinent to the broader community,” Barns says.
