Kitchen & Bathroom Issue

Kitchens and bathrooms are, arguably, the most consequential rooms in the home — and almost always the first to be considered. Whether approached through renovation or new build, their design has the power to recalibrate how a home is lived in and experienced. For this issue, our guest editor, Mardi Doherty, principal of Studio Doherty, explores what it truly means to transform these pivotal spaces — and why thoughtful design in kitchens and bathrooms delivers dividends far beyond the purely functional. Her insights both as an architect and as her own client give an open and honest account of the thinking behind creating a home.

Bathing in restorative sculptures

Reaching beyond hygiene and cleanliness to revive the soul, KALDEWEI launches their new Mineral Stone collection — a series of sculptural bathtubs made to marry the body’s contours.

The cathartic benefits and visceral reprieve bathing offers, as water glides up and over the heart, are universally resonant. It’s the kind of wisdom that KALDEWEI, a 100-year-old brand internationally renowned for bringing bathrooms to life, understands only too well. Beyond function, KALDEWEI’s carved forms and innovative materiality see their bathtubs stand apart, with the Mineral Stone collection representative of an evolving visual identity.

The design eye of Steve Leung shapes the collection. With four decades of experience, his designs draw on Asian cultures and the arts, alongside a people-oriented focus. His lens threads the fine balance between precision and an effortless silhouette. “With today’s intense lifestyle and challenges, immersing in a relaxing bath is the ultimate retreat. This sacred moment of tranquillity revitalises the body and rejuvenates the spirit, serving as a precious indulgence to treasure amidst daily hustles,” Leung says.

Sweeping curves and infinity-like forms code inspirations of the sun and moon into the designs that accommodate diverse interior design strategies, whether seeking to optimise space or impactfully feature the bathtub. A crisp white palette coats each pure form across the Mineral Stone collection.

The CRESENT series features a freestanding round or oval bath with a matching basin. The crescent symbolism is sculpted into functional rims and ledges that partially circle the bath. The outer ledge, wide enough for wash products or a glass of champagne, negates the need for a side table or bathtub trays that disrupt the design’s line. A lower ledge inside provides comfortable, ergonomic support.

The COCOON’s minimalist S-curve leans on craftmanship and nods to pottery, with bends that appear as though softly shaped between a pair of hands above a spinning pottery wheel. The indent gently contours the body, while the CIRRUS design encapsulates it, holding the body within its streamlined form, calmly shielding it from external distractions.

NEST offers interior designers a flexible, space-saving option that uniquely provides the essence of a freestanding bathtub experience, without sacrificing precious functional space. Three oval designs with precise slices removed from edges allow the back to sit flush against a wall or nestle into a corner.

The fourth-generation, family-run German company’s DNA is steeped in sustainable conscientiousness. KALDEWEI pioneers ‘Luxstainability’, a two-fold philosophy that considers luxury as the longevity of joy a product can bring, alongside sustainability. The science-forward company prioritises sustainable material development, including their unique, glass and recycled-steel, enamel formula. With the same innovative mindset, KALDEWEI developed Mineral Stone. Promoting comfort and durability, this collection’s materiality is chemical, UV, heat and scratch resistant.

Uniting material innovation with craftsmanship, KALDEWI’s Mineral Stone collection prioritises longevity, detail-oriented design and the knowledge that, whether a daily ritual or a savoured indulgence, there is refuge to be found within the comforting shell of a bath made with care.
