Recently renovated by Valdal Projects, the split-level home has been given a thoughtful and expansive make-over.
The original split level home with uninterrupted views to the dunes and sea beyond had another level added up and over the original first storey. This created a luxurious master suite with full horizon views over the ocean. In total the home has five bedrooms, three bathrooms, formal dining room, formal lounge, and open plan living with seamless connection to an outdoor entertainment area, pool and that glorious sweep of Sunshine Coast beachfront.
Shades of Toowoomba worked closely with the builder, Valdal, and blind and curtain manufacturer, Verosol, to design and supply window treatments that enhance the interior scheme while also delivering on protection from heat and glare.

The solution combines custom-made blinds with a Somfy automation system, sheer curtains and pleated blinds.
Jabour Hanna, managing director of Shades of Toowoomba, explains that internal blinds rather than an external awning solution were preferred due to the extremes experienced in the area. Salt spray, high winds and extreme heat can all have an impact on external blinds and awnings, whereas internal blinds can provide excellent insulation and also privacy when required.
Originally, the client had multiple blinds on large openings such as the lounge and living room windows. The goal was to obtain a more streamlined look by having custom-made blinds that could span the appropriate widths with a single blind, with the cavity for the retracted blinds recessed into the ceiling to deliver an absolutely clean line across the ceilings.

Having optimal light control and insulation was also a priority. For example, the blinds in the living, lounge and kitchen areas act to block the hot morning sun in summer and reduce indoor temperature gain. Once the sun stops hitting directly on the windows, the blinds can be raised to display the shimmering blue ocean outlook.
A Somfy motorised and automated control system enabled with Bluetooth combined with a wall mounted control panel makes operating all blinds throughout the home seamless. Hanna notes it also enables the family to operate the blinds remotely when they are away, which has added benefits for security.
In the living and dining room, motorised 25mm VEROCELL Pleated blinds in Norse Moonstruck 7623 provide for complete blockout. On the northern elevation the blind spans 1900mm x 2500mm and on the glazed doors to the patio, nearly eight metres of area comprising three door panels is covered by four blinds. One of spans, which measured 3130 mm – just over three metres width – was protected with two blinds on one headrail with a miniscule 3mm gap between the two blinds.

To soften the corner in the lounge and complement the retained natural timber floors, Verosol’s premium KVADRAT curtain fabric in Daybreak 2 Colour 141 was used for curtains on a hand-operated track. This gives the room an elegant, finished look, while adding a calming colour zone.
In the TV room, and four bedrooms, including two guest bedrooms, motorised Verosol roller blinds in 789 SEED in the colour Cumin 4000 provide full blockout for restfulness, light control and privacy. Each room has two blinds utilising a single Somfy automation motor, for ease of control.
The master bedroom on the uppermost floor has windows on two sides plus glazed doors on the east. These were fitted with motorised 25mm VEROCELL Pleated blinds in Alta Pearl 5110, which provides full blockout and insulation from the heat of the sun. The blinds have varied spans ranging between 1800mm through to 3070mm and also feature the additional softening and glamour of sheer curtains hung in front of the blinds to create a more formal finish for the entire master suite.

The Verosol sheers also reduce UV light and glare in the master suite, without the need to lower the blinds, enabling occupants of the room to bask in its dramatic views.
Hanna says that as soon as he heard the client brief and its requirements for longevity, style, and environmental benefits in terms of passive solutions for reducing heat, he was confident in recommending Verosol products.
“Verosol really know their stuff. We love working with them. We have just been completing another project with them at Sunrise Beach and have another underway in the Bunya Mountains.”
For Peregian Beach, his team worked closely with Alison Peach, Verosol’s Queensland representative, on the specifications and materials selections for the project.
“The end result was a happy client who appreciated the great help from Alison Peach,” Hanna says.
