Vintage Modern Issue

The breadth and scope of Habitus has always been extraordinary. With how we live at heart of every issue, we have stepped it up with Guest Editor David Flack of Flack Studio shaking the ‘how’ and looking at new ways to make a house a home. With Vintage Modern as the issues theme, we look at the way iconic design has stayed with us, how daring pieces from the past can add the wow factor and how architecture and good design defy the pigeon hole of their era.

Hästens’ Sydney showroom awakens Scandinavian dreams

Australia

Hästens

We’re not sleeping on Hästens’ newest Sydney showroom, brought to life in collaboration with Great Dane.

Hästens has opened its Australian flagship showroom in the heart of Sydney’s Paddington, marking a significant milestone in the brand’s global narrative. Situated on Oxford Street, this tri-level space invites visitors to submerge themselves in a world where craftsmanship reigns supreme and sleep is elevated to an art form. Founded in 1852, Hästens has long been synonymous with quality, and this latest venture, in partnership with Great Dane, signals a new chapter.

The collaboration between Hästens and Great Dane is a union of likeminded purveyors, mutually dedicated to honouring the traditions of Scandinavian design. Great Dane, led by Anton Assaad and Megan Marshall, has built a reputation as Australia’s foremost curator of Scandinavian craftsmanship.

“We are honoured to partner with Hästens to bring their world-class beds to Australia,” says Anton Assaad, Founder and Director of Great Dane. “With the increasing focus on health and wellness, we are confident that Hästens’ expertise in sleep will resonate with Australians looking to prioritise their wellbeing.”

The space itself, executed under the stewardship of Sydney architect Michael Robilliard, alongside Great Dane and Hästens’ global showroom design team, is subtle yet impactful. The interiors pay homage to Hästens’ Swedish heritage, with an emphasis on natural light and materiality. The design is punctuated by bespoke details such as leather-wrapped banisters and custom furnishings and noteworthily, the furniture and lighting from Great Dane accentuate the Scandinavian narrative.

Every Hästens bed is crafted from a chosen palette of natural materials, including horsetail hair, cotton, wool and flax. These components, selected for their breathability and temperature-regulating properties, ensure a sleep experience that is restorative and enduring. The use of horsetail hair, which functions as a natural spring, is emblematic of Hästens’ innovative approach to comfort. Each bed undergoes a five-stage production process, a rigorous journey that culminates in a product designed to last a lifetime. A 25-year warranty stands as a testament to this confidence in quality and durability.

The showroom experience is deeply personalised, with private appointments available for those seeking tailored sleep solutions. Hästens’ sleep experts offer guidance on everything from firmness preferences to custom dimensions, ensuring that each bed is bespoke to the individual’s needs. This commitment to personalisation is embedded in Hästens’ philosophy that sleep is not a one-size-fits-all endeavour but a deeply personal journey.

The opening of the Paddington flagship follows the resounding success of Hästens’ store-in-store within Great Dane’s Fitzroy showroom. The expansion is a natural progression, with plans to broaden Hästens’ reach across Australia and New Zealand. Beyond retail, Hästens and Great Dane are setting their sights on partnerships within the realms of hospitality, property development, and wellness, further embedding the brand within the fabric of luxury living.

Johan Lindbäck, Hästens’ Global Sales Director, articulates this vision with clarity: “As the focus on health and wellness continues to grow, we’re excited to expand our world-class sleep solutions in the Australian market with our flagship showroom opening in the heart of Sydney. We believe everyone deserves the best sleep, and with the Hästens bed, you can truly feel confident in a great night’s sleep and being your best self.”
